The Final Years of Conflict
In the following years, the Elven war began to dwindle in intensity. Most Elven
city states were in pockets of land separated from other states by mountain ranges,
rivers and other natural boundaries. As one faction or another dominated an area,
they saw little reason to venture further outwards to continue the war in other
regions. There was no single ruler from any faction that could motivate city states
from one region to move troops to distant lands in large numbers. Eventually these
isolated regions would become the lands of the High Elves and Dark Elves of today.
The terrible destruction during the war also made saner minds on both sides realize
that to continue the war would be disastrous for both sides. No formal peace treaties
were signed, however over the next hundred years the engagements in the war eventually
became little more than minor skirmishes and naval raids.
In the following years, the Elves from both sides rebuilt their most important cities.
In their weakened state, some city-states were unable to contain slave revolts or
stand against the barbarian, dwarf, and Halfling tribes they had so easily conquered
in the past. Most mainland city states or those weakened in the war were abandoned.
The elves also began to face raids from the abominations created in the war. They
fought many costly battles against the undead, demons and beastmen. Despite these
challenges, the Elves today have recovered much of their former strength, though
they face a world filled with powerful enemies.
